Description
Widow Maryam Suleman, 55, lacks identification papers and is invisible in the eyes of the government, just like one in five Pakistanis who remain officially unregistered.
Her son, Ahmed Raza, is also unable to obtain his papers as he needs his mother's documents to do so. Without them, he is unable to study, marry, or travel, and he has been detained twice for failing to produce ID during police checks.
"Our lives could have been different if we had our identity cards. I could have continued my education, found a job, and moved around freely. Everything would have been different," Raza says. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
