July 9 on The Story: On the Fourth of July, President Donald Trump celebrated by signing his flagship budget bill into law. The so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," among other things, extends and expands a number of tax cuts that especially benefit higher-income households. To partially offset those cuts, the bill slashes federal Medicaid and food assistance spending, and it's estimated to add about $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. In Oregon, where over a third of residents are on Medicaid via the Oregon Health Plan, state leaders and health care providers alike are sounding the alarm — saying these cuts will hit both patients and hospitals.
