Description
July 7 on The Story: Since 2022, it's been illegal to sell or set off any personal fireworks within the Portland city limits, full stop — even the "safe and sane" kind that are usually allowable in Oregon. And yet, this Fourth of July, the rockets' red glare and the bombs bursting in air were nigh inescapable. In the run-up to the holiday, city officials urged Portlanders not to call 911 for fireworks complaints, but to instead report them to an automated system. Within the first hour after sunset, Portland Fire & Rescue said they received 400 reports, ultimately hitting 4,000 reports overnight.
