June 19 on The Story: For more than three decades, the James Beard Public Market has been little more than a Portland pipe dream. Now, the pieces are finally falling into place for it to become a reality. Last year, the foundation behind the project bought a huge space downtown, but they're trying to raise $25 million to turn that space into the public market of Portland's dreams. Plenty of donors both private and public have thrown their financial support behind the project, but a bill in the legislature to add state investment appears stalled just days away from the end of this year's session.
