Description
In Seibersdorf, about 50 kilometers from Vienna, Austria, there are eight laboratories belonging to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Among them is the Insect Pest Control Laboratory, which fights invasive insect pest species (on fruit flies, tsetse flies, and mosquitoes) without pesticides through the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), a method of birth control applied to target insect pest populations. The Plant Breeding and Genetics Laboratory, meanwhile, is strengthening food security and resilience to climate change through high-yielding crop varieties resistant to disease, drought and other harsh conditions.
