Washingtonians reacting to former President Donald Trump's call for the Commanders to revert to their old name, the Redskins, say they’re largely unfazed by his opinion.
Trump on Sunday threatened to block a stadium deal for the NFL team unless it restores the name, which was retired in 2022 after years of criticism that it was offensive to Native Americans. The team has not responded publicly to his remarks.
The Associated Press spoke with locals in downtown Washington to gauge their reactions.
“I just rolled my eyes. I mean, it’s typical Trump stupidity — him focusing on things that aren’t consequential and trying to distract from the real issues going on,” said Ender Tuncay.
Tuncay said he’s indifferent about the name itself. “I’d be fine with them changing the name back. I’d be fine with them keeping the name Commanders.”
A spokesperson for the National Congress of American Indians said Monday the organization was finalizing a statement in response to Trump’s comments.
