Description
8/11/1967 City and county officials took part in today's ceremony. Supervisor Robert Cozens reviewed features of the road and thanked the many persons involved in planning and building - and coordinating its construction with completion of the stadium. Mayor Curran and District Highway Engineer Jacob Dekema also spoke, outlining methods used to build the access roads and stadium. Overall cost of this project was ten-million dollars with federal, state, city, and county highway funds paying the bill. As a climax to the program a symbolic group of Friars and Indian Maidens-- led by Father Valentine Healey of the San Luis Rey Mission--presented a scroll to Cozens, Curran, and Dekema signifying that the road is officially open and dedicated. With the improved highways, fans should be able to attend events at the stadium without experiencing any undue traffic delays. Dekema said that ultimately the state plans to build an interchange at the intersection of Friars road and Highway 395.
