July 22 on The Story: At the end of June, Oregon's 2025 legislative session came to an inglorious close without lawmakers accomplishing one of their biggest priorities for the session — coming up with a way to rescue the chronically underfunded Oregon Department of Transportation. As a result, the agency quickly had to announce a devastating round of layoffs, impacting nearly 500 employees in just the first wave. But on Tuesday, Gov. Tina Kotek put those layoffs on pause, calling a special session for the end of August and giving lawmakers the sole mission of figuring out the transportation funding conundrum once and for all, or at least for the near-term.
