Sept. 30 on The Story: Later this week, some 200 Oregon National Guard troops are expected to roll into Portland, having been pressed into federal service by President Donald Trump. Their stated mission will be to protect federal buildings and federal law enforcement officers. But for the small group of protestors who've been gathering outside of the Portland ICE facility at the center of all this, the troop activation is a baffling waste of resources. Though protests do sometimes become raucous at night, violent clashes peaked months ago. And the arrival of troops is unlikely to stop the people who've kept coming out to voice their opposition to ICE.
