Sept. 29 on The Story: Over the weekend, President Donald Trump followed through on a threat to deploy military troops to Portland, federalizing 200 members Oregon National Guard as his administration steps up federal law enforcement presence in the city. We learned today that those troops should arrive later this week, once the logistics are all figured out. Meanwhile, state and local leaders have been largely united in their messaging on a few key points: that Portland has no need of National Guard troops, and that Portlanders should avoid "taking the bait" by keeping any protest peaceful.
