Description
Video captured the moment the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a fisherman early Tuesday morning near Waldport.
Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a mayday call around 5:40 a.m. from the commercial fishing vessel, which reported the vessel was disabled in the surf near the entrance to the Alsea River. Shortly after, the fisherman stopped responding to radio calls, the Coast Guard said.
A 47-foot lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay and an MH-65E Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend were launched. Sector Columbia River also contacted a nearby commercial vessel to help.
The helicopter crew arrived first and deployed a rescue swimmer, who hoisted the man from the water. The captain was evaluated for mild hypothermia, the Coast Guard said. He was taken to Samaritan Hospital in Newport.
