Description
This winter, nurses inside Johnson Memorial Health's emergency department are busy.
In fact, they're five times busier than this time last year.
"We are seeing, absolutely, an increase in our patient volumes," said Katy Howe, a registered nurse and the department's clinical nurse manager. "Difficulty breathing. Cough. Fever has been very, very prevalent."
More patients are reporting common signs of influenza-like illness, or ILI.
Howe says five-times more patients are testing positive for influenza compared to early 2024.
