A bipartisan bill at the Indiana Statehouse would take steps to try and deal with Indiana's medical debt problem.
According to the Baker Institute at Rice University, 16% of Indiana families have medical debt in collections. In some rural counties that number is as high as 28%.
The problem hits communities of color particularly hard, with one in four families reporting medical debt in collections.
In Marion County, one in five families has medical debt in collections.
According to the Urban Institute, Indiana is eleventh in country for the percentage of the population with medical debt in collections. They also say the average family with medical debt in collections owes about $1,400.
