The Lafayette parents of a 5-year-old who fatally shot their 1-year-old sibling in July 2023 will soon know their legal fates. Shatia Welch has withdrawn her previous not guilty plea and has now pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. As a result, the prosecution has dropped all other charges. Welch was facing additional drug charges prior to the agreement. Her sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the father, Deonta Johnson, is set for a jury trial. He is charged with multiple drug and child neglect felonies. A date for Johnson's trial has not yet been set.
