IMPD confirmed the father of a 7-year-old boy and a woman have been arrested in connection to the child's death on the near southwest side of Indianapolis. Officers responded to a report of a death investigation around 3:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 in the 1300 block of South Pershing Avenue, near West Morris Street and South Belmont Avenue. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive child inside the home. Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. Officers said they saw "injuries consistent with trauma" on the boy's body, as well as signs of malnourishment. Jessica Ryan, an aunt of 7-year-old Kayden Gavarette, confirmed the boy as the victim. Ryan told 13News she tried to get custody of Gavarette when his mom died in 2022, but she was unsuccessful because she didn't have enough proof that he'd be better off living in her care instead of his biological dad's.
