Description
A man has died and a suspect has been charged with murder after a shooting near a restaurant in Lawrence Sunday evening, police said.
Around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 15, a Lawrence Police Department officer was patrolling in the area of Pendleton Pike and North Post Road when they heard shots being fired, a department spokesperson said.
The officer arrived at Don Marco's Restaurant, located at 4779 N. Post Road, and found people running and a man, later identified by the Marion County Coroner's Office as 34-year-old Germane Tepale Alonso, with a gunshot wound. Police said Alonso was in critical condition at an area hospital but died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The officer saw people pointing at a car that was "trying to flee the scene," police said. The officer pulled over the driver, a 42-year-old man, who was detained and arrested.
According to court documents, detectives believe the suspect initially lied about his name, but they were able to identify him as Eliezer Suarez, thanks to the help of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
