Description
It's a sight no airline passenger or first responder wants to see: a plane up in flames on an airport tarmac. A scenario unheard of at the Indianapolis International Airport, but one emergency crews prepared for Wednesday.
"Realism is a big, important factor," said Matt Lewis, senior director of operations for the Indianapolis International Airport.
Several police and fire departments who provide mutual aid to the airport joined forces for the Federal Aviation Administration-mandated Airport Preparedness Exercise.
Nearly 400 people from 30 organizations, including 125 volunteers, helped with the exercise, which takes place once every three years, assessing airport operations during and after emergency protocols.
