Beginning Wednesday, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay is stopping all adoptions and intakes of kittens under the age of four months due to an outbreak of a highly contagious and deadly disease. Officials with the organization say Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distempter) is affecting the greater Tampa Bay area. It causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever and loss of appetite among other issues. In a statement, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay said the following: "This drastic but necessary decision was made with much care after consulting veterinary experts. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay has seen a steady increase in cases and severity and it is our responsibility to protect the public and break the spread of this serious disease." Officials are keeping the quarantine in place through Wednesday, July 2. The non-profit says If you have a cat or kitten with any of these symptoms, please seek veterinary care immediately.
