Description
Sept. 3 on The Story: Nestled within the woods of the Sandy River Delta just past Troutdale are dozens of homeless camps. For some inhabitants of the delta, it isn't just about a lack of permanent housing — it's a choice to live off the grid. But multiple times a year, firefighters from nearby Corbett are called out to fight fires in the wilderness, and they struggle to gain access. It's not just the terrain, either — in some cases, fire crews are also dealing with inhabitants actively working to keep them out. Meanwhile, the state of Oregon's last attempt to clear these camps out ended in conflict and failure.
