Description
The Senate's failure to pass a new funding bill led to a full government shutdown — the first one in seven years. Weeks of disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over healthcare subsidies have led to both parties blaming each other for the shutdown.
Each federal agency and department began the shutdown process on Wednesday morning, leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers on furlough. Essential employees are staying on the job, but nearly all employees, whether furloughed or not, will go without pay for the duration of the funding lapse.
