Description
Councilmember Oliver Thomas — known to some as “OT” — is one of the top three polling candidates in the 2025 New Orleans mayoral race. His story is one of deep community ties, personal loss, and a political comeback.
Roots & Advocacy: Thomas calls New Orleans a “glorious grimy place” — but also one of the hardest places for young Black children to grow up. His career began as a community organizer before being elected to City Council.
Experience: He has served in multiple council roles, most recently representing District E (New Orleans East).
Scandal & Redemption: Thomas resigned in 2007 after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges, serving 37 months in prison. He frames his return to office as a redemption story, saying he has accomplished more in his 3.5 years back than many in the 14 years before.
Focus: His campaign emphasizes progress in food deserts, redevelopment of the Six Flags site, and restoring Lincoln Beach.
📊 WWL Louisiana poll (August 2025):
