Description
On his visit to Turkey in late November, Pope Leo XIV will address Christians from the site of the First Council of Nicaea -- a meeting which helped shape the religious consensus within Christianity -- for the 1,700th anniversary of the event. The submerged Basilica of Saint Neophytos was discovered in 2014 in Lake Iznik, and is "highly significant for all Christian communities" due to the historic council held there in 325 AD, explains archeologist Mustafa Sahin. In the town also famed for its ceramics, tile workers have prepared a fresco as a gift for the pontiff. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
