Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says 20-year-old sexual allegations that have recently resurfaced did not impact his decision not to seek a third term. Sexual allegations made 20 years ago recently resurfaced in a Deadspin article, then ESPN postponed the national TV premiere of the 30-for-30 documentary on the Sacramento Kings in light of the article and a local democratic party leader called Johnson out. "It was a tough decision for me," Johnson said at a press conference in Sacramento on Wednesday. He said the failure of his "strong mayor" initiative last year was a factor in his decision not run. Later on Wednesday, Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby declared her candidacy for the office. "If you go back to November of a year ago, we had strong mayor (measure) on the ballot and it didn't pass," Johson said. "I was very candid at the time that I probably wouldn't seek reelection. " Johnson said the trajectory of the city has been for the good under his tenure as mayor. During today's press conference, Johnson said he is proud of the work done by his administration in recent months -- including initiatives on affordable housing and public safety. No Sacramento mayor has ever served three terms, but it was speculated Johnson would seek another. The mayor made it clear he would finish out his term and he is not "abandoning" Sacramento. Johnson said on Monday he took a trip to Phoenix, where he prayed and got the clarity he needed to make the decision not to run for reelection. "I felt that I owed it to the community to share my plans," he said. Johnsons added that he has no plans after his tenure is up.
